THE SECRETS OF INSECTS
Richard Kadrey
Detectives Leonard Moore and Dale Komiski walked the prisoner to the car. With the killer cuffed and shackled, it took a few minutes to get him out of the elevator and put him into the backseat. Dale was careful not to strike the prisonerâs head on the door frame and to make sure that his hands and feet were safely inside before closing the door. Len nodded in approval. The prisoner was important and he wanted everything locked down, secure, and, above all, boring.
âBoring is always the best scenario,â he liked to tell younger detectives. âItâs like going to the doctor. If thereâs something wrong with you, you want it to be boring. If the doc gets too interested, youâre fucked.â
âDull enough for you, boss?â said Dale, getting into the car. He smiled at the older man.
âSo far, so good,â said Len. He got behind the wheel and steered them away from the San Francisco central holding facility. Ten minutes later they were on the freeway, heading south. The afternoon was clear and sunny. Hot even. Traffic on 101 was sparse. A good beginning, he thought.
Dale fiddled around with the air conditioner controls.
âHowâs that?â
Len nodded.
âJust fine.â
He rapped on the cage separating the backseat from the front with his knuckle.
âDonât start,â said Len.
âIâm being polite,â Dale said. He half turned in his seat. âHowâs it for you back there, Looney Tunes? Comfy?â
The prisoner was thin and tall enough that his head grazed the carâs ceiling. When he smiled, which he did now, his face was all teeth.
âVery. Thank you, Detective Dale,â he said.
âThatâs Detective Komiski. And when youâre referring to my partner, itâs Detective Moore.â
âOf course.â
The prisoner pressed his face to the window and looked up into the cloudless sky.
âI wonder if itâs going to rain.â
Dale looked out his window.
âAre you kidding? Itâs never going to rain again.â
âThe drought. Some say itâs the act of an angry God.â
âWho says that?â
âOh, you know. People.â
âSometimes people donât know shit.â
âI agree completely. Still. It would be nice if it rained.â
âThat it would.â
The prisoner didnât speak again for over an hour and they passed through San Jose.
âAh. The happy hunting grounds,â he said, then frowned. âThat was a gruesome thing to say, wasnât it?â
âA little,â said Len.
âSorry. Still, itâs interesting how definitions of acceptable versus unacceptable change; donât you think so, Detective Dale?â
âChange how?â said Dale.
The prisoner looked out the window.
âAn older black man like Detective Leonard chauffeuring a young white man like you. Why, back in my daddyâs day, people would have thought something of that. How the situation denoted who had status and privilege. But in these more enlightened times, no one bats an eye.â
Dale looked at Len. Len shook his head.
âI told you not to start, didnât I?â he said.
Dale turned to the prisoner.
âThat was an asshole thing to say, Astenâ he said. âThrough this whole thing, the trial and everything, you werenât an asshole. Donât start now.â
âOf course. Youâre right,â said the prisoner. âDetective Leonard, please accept my apologies.
